The Memphis Cook Convention was the venue for The Masters of Funk Tour this past December. Music groups who hay day was during the 70’s and 80’s hit the stage and delighted old school music fans.
The Master’s of Funk tour consisted of The Bar-Kays, The Original Lakeside Band, Yarbrough and Peoples, Rose Royce, Brick, Cherrelle and Steve Arrington from the group “Slave.” The concert was presented by Next Millennium Entertainment.
Audience members who couldn’t stay contained in their seats during the performance created their own dance floor. It was kind of like those impromptu neighborhood backyard parties from back in the day. When R&B group Yarbrough and People’s hit the stage, concert-goers were singing along with the melody, “Just because it’s 2 o’clock, don’t mean that we have the stop” while swaying back and forth holding up two fingers.
Even in this beautiful moment, the one thing in everyone’s mind was, who’s going to replace The Bar-Kays lead singer, Larry Dodson? Dodson made an announcement early this year that he would be retiring from The Bar-Kays.
Since the announcement, Memphis had been wondering who would win the spot as the lead singer of the legendary group. News spread quickly that the new lead singer would be announced at The Masters of Funk concert.
As The Bar-Kays hit the stage to do their last set for the night, Larry Dodson brought out his replacement. It was none other than Memphis R&B singer, Chris J. Chris J received a warm welcome from audience members as he sang along with Larry Dodson and other band members.
Christopher “Chris J” Johnson is a native of Memphis, Tennessee and is an accomplished singer, songwriter, and producer. Chris J has been on BET 106 and Park as well as MTV. He has performed alongside Gucci Mane in “Jump Shot Money,” Trina in “I Got A Problem” and Plies in “Put It On You.” In 2010, his first video was shot back in Memphis for the song “Balcony.” Chris J also came out with a song called “Dumb,” written by Sergio Surroco.
Johnson will bring contemporary soul to the legendary Bar-Kays group. Giving The Bar-Kays music that will appeal to young and old school music lovers.
